The Imo State Police Command has picked up a retired soldier and a dismissed policeman as it began the arrest of suspects involved in the recent Zenith Bank robbery along Wetheral Road in Owerri, the state’s capital.
A top source at the State Criminal Investigations Department, told our correspondent that the ex-soldier and the dismissed policeman were partners in crime and they had been terrorising residents of Imo and its environs.
“In this particular operation, an insider hinted them about the huge deposit that was coming to the branch that very day and that was the reason they struck. So, we say it was insiders’ handiwork and that is very bad,” he said.
The source added that the arrest of the two suspects was made possible by a traditional ruler (name withheld) in the Mbaise area of the state.
“The two suspects have been on police wanted list for close to two years now but nobody was able to arrest them or should I say had the nerves to go close to them to effect their arrest,” he said.
The source revealed that from available record of bank robbery in Imo State and its environs, the two were either active or passive participant.
“If they don’t lead the operation, they must approve of it. No group can operate in that area without their knowledge,” said a senior police officer.
It was gathered that the two suspects, who were simply identified with their nicknames, “One-Chance” (soldier) and Bulldozer (policeman), earn their living from crime.
