Worried by the flooding experienced annually in the area, the authorities of Gumi Local Government Area council in Zamfara State have evolved a strategy to avert a recurrence of the disaster during this year’s rainy season.
The Chairman of the council, Saidu Bawa Dakitakwas, who disclosed this, said that the council had embarked on the construction of culverts and water ways in the towns and villages for the passage of storm water during downpour.
Dakitakwas further said that youths organisations had been mobilised to clear drainages and other waterways in towns and villages in the area.
According to him, over the years, the area had suffered series of flooding incidents resulting in the loss of crops and property of the inhabitants.
“We are so concerned with the series of floods we have been experiencing during rainy seasons; that is why we are taking measures to avert its occurrence”, he added.
Dakitakwas expressed optimism that the people in the local government area would have a flood-free rainy season this year.
He, however, commended Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari over the construction of roads linking Gumi town, the headquarters of the local government, with its major towns and villages.
He also lauded the state government for the irrigation rice farming scheme introduced in the area.
The council boss noted that farmers had benefitted positively by having a bumper harvest.
