The All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State has mourned the people killed in an airstrike mishap and is calling for a probe into the matter.

An airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force mistakenly hit members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard, local vigilantes, and residents, leaving at least 16 people dead.

In its reaction to the incident, the APC in the state consoled the families of the victims over the “unfortunate” event.

“The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress APC under the Chairmanship of Hon Tukur Umar Danfulani and its leaders wish to extend heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state especially the people of Tungar Kara under Kakindawa village of Gidan Goga District area of Maradun Local Government Area over the unfortunate accidental airstrike on Saturday that led to the death of innocent people including some personnel of the state’s Community Protection Guard and vigilantes,” the Zamfara APC spokesman Yusuf Gusau said.

He said “As we mourn the gallant sacrifice of our citizens who paid the supreme price while chasing bandits who have made life unbearable to the people, we pray Allah to accept their martyrdom and accommodate them in Jannaatu Firdausi and give their bereaved families, the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”

It called on the “authorities concerned to thoroughly investigate the unfortunate accidental airstrike with a view of preventing a recurrence.”

The APC, however, commended the military for its “ongoing onslaught against the bandits” that has led to the “elimination of many criminals in the state.”

“This change of operation is quite impressive as the troops of Fasan Yamma are taking the fights now to the bandits’ hideouts making them abandon such hideouts,” the statement read.

The military authorities are yet to comment on the latest incident. Similar ones have happened in the past.
