Men of the Kano State Police Command have arrested 35-year-old Lawan Bello, resident of Kano metropolis, for allegedly beating his 10-year-old son to death.

The murder suspect said in an exclusive interview with The Point that he handled his late son with iron hand because he was stubborn.

He added that the corporal punishment meted out to his late son was intended to correct his misdeeds and was not aimed to kill him.

Bello said, “From time to time, I received reports of his misbehaviour. He would not carry out the domestic duties given to him. His step-mother kept reporting him to me, so I tried to caution him but my late son would not listen. I decided to apply corporal punishment to correct him.”

One of his neighbours, who spoke under the condition of anonymity said, “We tried our best as neighbours to plead with Lawan to leave the boy; he did not listen and he did not stop beating the boy.

“He used a pestle in beating the boy until we no longer heard his cry. Later, the father started shouting for help. When we got there, the boy was already cold.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kano State Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said that Lawan Bello was already in police custody.

Kiyawa said that the case had been transferred to the homicide section in Bompai for discreet investigation.
