Taiwo Awoniyi’s dream of playing for England’s elite side, Liverpool may never come to fulfilment, with the standby policy of the club shielding foreigners who were not products of its academy off the main stream.
According to the Liverpool’s transfer policy, no foreign attacking player has ever made it through the Academy to become a first-team regular at Liverpool, so Awoniyi will face the same problems as it has affected countless others over the years.
In November 2015, Liverpool snapped up the Nigerian striker and after spending last season on loan at Frankfurt, Germany, the highly-rated player was considered for another loan deal.
Awoniyi appears to have the right attitude to succeed, but like so many others, he may end up being corrupted by the pernicious greed at the heart of the modern game.
He is expected to complete a season-long loan move to Holland with NEC Nijmegen later this week.
And it appears that the striker will suffer the same fate as last season, as he finds himself surplus to requirements at Anfield since he is unable to qualify for a UK work permit.
Official confirmation of the move has been put on hold due to a work permit not yet being granted, but NEC hope that the move will be finalised this week.
Awoniyi was initially a part of the 35-man provisional squad selected by Nigeria to attend the 2016 Olympics in Rio this summer, who took home a bronze medal. His best form arguably comes in his national appearances, scoring 13 times in 21 games across the Nigerian youth teams.
