A total of 786,016 candidates representing 49.98 per cent of the total number that sat for the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by The West African Examinations Council obtained credits and above in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
Head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, disclosed this while addressing journalists today at a press conference for the release of the results at the WAEC training and Testing Centre, WTTC, Ogba, Lagos.
This, according to him, has declined from that of 2017 and 2016, which was 59.22% and 52.97%, respectively.
According to him, WASSCE 2018 took place from March 27, 2018 to June 1, 2018, but ended in Nigeria in May, 15, 2018.
He added that out of a total of 1,578,846 candidates that registered for the examination from 17,886 recognised secondary schools, only 1,572,396 candidates sat for the examination.
“Of the total that sat for the examination, 823,424 were male and 748,972 were female, representing 52.36% and 47.63%, respectively.
Giving the analysis, Adenipekun said a total of 1,213,244 candidates, representing 76.84% obtained credit and above in any five subjects without English language and Mathematics.
However, 858,424 candidates, representing 54.59%, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English but without Mathematics.
Congratulating the candidates for their success in the examination, the HNO said candidates who sat for the examination and who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the council were free to check the details of their performance on the council’s result website: www.waecdirect.org.
