A 24-year-old man, Childera Igwe, has been allegedly beaten to death by some members of the Vigilante group of Eguhuo Ezzegu community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The Point gathered that the victim had allegedly been in the habit of breaking into people’s provision shops in the area and carting away goods therein.
According to a source in the community, Igwe was in the month of July 2024, apprehended by the members of the vigilante for burgling a shop.
It was said that the suspect died while being tortured by the security operatives.
Meanwhile, the police said one of the vigilantes has been arrested over the incident.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Joshua Ukandu confirmed the report and disclosed they already arrested a suspect in connection to the matter.
Ukandu assured that the suspect under their custody would be charged to court as soon as the command is through with its investigations.
“The deceased in the matter is one Mr. Chidera Igwe, about 24 years old. The suspect we have under our custody is Mr. Azubuike Nwonu. The people alleged that the deceased broke into a shop.
“The matter is still under investigation. Once the team in charge is done, he will be charged to court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution,” the police spokesperson said.
