Varsity security staff allegedly lynched by colleagues

A staff of a security outfit working in Ebonyi State University permanent site Ezzamgbo, Ebube Igboke, has been allegedly lynched by his colleagues.

The deceased was said to have died during intense beating on February 27, 2025 in the University premises and was later taken to police headquarters Abakaliki by some of his colleagues namely Elum Joseph Chinonso, Ada Ogechukwu and Nwafor Sabastine Umoke.

In a petition on behalf of the bereaved family and authored by D. I. Njoku solicitors and advocates, the colleagues were accused of conspiracy and murder of Igboke and prayed to the State Commissioner of Police to order immediate arrest of the culprits, carry out in depth investigations about the complaints and bring the culprits to book.

The lawyer in the petition addressed to the CP said, “It is the brief of our client that his brother Mr Ebube Igboke (now late) worked with a private security outfit called “Middle pillar security”, a security outfit which works with Ebonyi State University permanent site Ezzamgbo.

“It is further the brief of our client that on the 27th day of February 2025, 13 staff of the security outfit (names withheld) and others conspired and murdered Mr Ebube Igboke by beating him to death. One Miss Oluomachi Mkpuma, a fiancée to the deceased who also works with the security outfit was called in the morning of 27th day of February 2025 that her fiancé was beaten and died at their work place, upon receiving the call she ran to the place to see if she could take him to hospital and revive him but was denied access by the above named conspirators.

“That the deceased died from injuries inflicted on him when beaten by members of the security outfit and in order to escape justice hurriedly took his dead body to the police headquarters Abakaliki after they had earlier on denied the deceased fiancee Oluomachi Mkpuma access to his dead body.

“It is based on the foregoing that we pray you sir to use your esteemed good office to wit: Order the immediate arrest of the culprits, to investigate our complaint and take the necessary actions with a view to curbing further crimes and bring the culprits to book.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state Command, Ukandu Joshua confirmed the incident, saying that the command has arrested three suspects in connection with the case and that the corpse has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

Ukandu assured that in-depth investigations have commenced and when completed, the suspects would be prosecuted before court of competent jurisdiction.

“The information I have is that Ebube Igboke was brought into the headquarters by some people from that EBSU on February 27. Then immediately we advised he should be taken to the hospital because of the state they brought him. There, he was confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty.

“We are already investigating the matter. We have three suspects in our custody and when we are done, the suspects will be charged to court,” the PPRO explained.
