Following a purported military take over by a Turkish military group, the Presidency has said that the attack was not authorised by the military command and declared it illegal and unconstitutional.
A top source in the Presidency told The Point that the attack is an attack against Turkish democracy.
“A group within the Armed Forces has made an attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government outside the chain of command. We urge the world to stand in solidarity with the Turkish people,” our source said.
She added that a top general in the army was taken hostage at the military headquarters in Ankara after some soldiers had attempted a military take over.
Though, President Recep Erdogan has not released an official statement on the development, soldiers were seen at several locations in the commercial capital, Istanbul and Ankara.
In Ankara, jets flew low while ordinary citizens rushed for the safety of their homes after witnessing the coup attempt.
Meanwhile, the military group had insisted that power in the country had been seized in its entirety.
According to a statement released to AFP, the military confirmed that its action was to ensure and restore constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedom, and let the supremacy law in the country prevail, to restore order which was disrupted.
“All our international agreements and commitments retain their validity. We hope our good relations will continue with all countries in the world, ” it said.
