Some yet-to-be identified gunmen were said to have attacked the Ado-Ekiti residence of Prof. Banji Akintoye, shooting sporadically over the weekend.

Akintoye, 86, is the leader of the umbrella body of the Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua.

Maxwell Adeleye, spokesman to Akintoye, disclosed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

The statement quoted him as saying that the gunmen stormed the neighbourhood on Saturday and attempted to access the compound.

It read that Akintoye was, however, not around when the incident occurred and no one was hurt. Some expended bullets were seen in the compound.

It added that the situation had since been reported to the Ekiti State Police Command for investigation.

The emeritus Professor of History and member of the Senate in the Second Republic has been at the forefront of the struggle for the actualisation of Yoruba nation.
