An unarmed gallant police officer attached to the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, Ajeromi/ Ifelodun local government unit, Lagos, has disarmed and arrested a notorious armed robber in the metropolis.
The police officer, identified as Inspector Jonathan, was said to have arrested the bandit, popularly known as Oriki, whose gang had been terrorising the residents of the locality.
Jonathan was said to have seen Oriki at Orizu Lane, off Aiyenero Street, Ajegunle, hurrying to escape from his pursuers as blood gushed out from his body.
Jonathan allegedly waylaid the suspect and asked where he was coming from that blood was gushing out from his body.
The alleged criminal was alleged to have attempted to pull out his gun to possibly shoot at the officer but the cop overpowered him.
Oriki was identified as a notorious armed robber that killed a man at Ojo Road area of the
locality.
An eyewitness, Alex David, said, “Immediately Oriki suspected that the man in front of him wanted to apprehend him, he wanted to pull out the pistol concealed in his trousers but the police officer wrestled the gun from his hands. The officer then ordered him to kneel down and he obeyed.
“At that juncture, residents came closer and identified Oriki as one of the wanted armed robbers that had been terrorising the area. His gang had raped many married women and minors. They had raped pregnant women. They had raped old women. They even raped women in the church and stole their mobile phones, robbed mosques in Ajegunle.
“He has killed many people. He killed a man at Ojo Road. He is a very brutal armed robber who enjoys brutal killings.”
David said the arrest of Oriki and some other armed robbers like Timothy in the area was a good omen to the people of Ajegunle, who rejoiced over
Oriki’s arrest.
He said when the angry youths begged the police officer to allow them take away the suspect so that they would give him jungle justice, the officer refused, protecting the robber from being harmed.
“He had to call his colleagues at Ajeromi Police Station who arrived the scene in a patrol vehicle and took the suspect away,”
he said.
The Point gathered that the SARS officers attached to the unit had to carry out an investigation, which led to the suspect taking them to his hideouts where the police recovered one AK-47
rifle.
Meanwhile, policemen attached to SARS, Ajegunle unit, said that the case had been transferred to SARS, Ikeja, for further information.
They also told our correspondent that they could not disclose the identity of the inspector that did the wonderful job, but instead referred him to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana; or Officer in charge of SARS, Ikeja, CSP Peter Gana or the Commissioner of Police in charge of Lagos State, Police Command, Mr Zubairu Muazu.
