UI PG school admits 6,520 of 12,301 applicants – VC

The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka, has said that only 6,520 qualified candidates out of a total number of 12,301, who applied for admission into the Postgraduate School of the premier university during the 2015/2016 academic session, were offered admission for various programmes.
Speaking at the second day convocation ceremonies for postgraduate graduands, the VC said that the high number of applicants into various programmes of the Institution was an eloquent testimony to the fact both the new and existing postgraduate programmes of the university were popular and acceptable.
At this year’s convocation, which also marked the 68th founders’ day celebration, 4,022 candidates received their respective higher degrees and postgraduate diplomas at an event that began on Tuesday.
This year’s convocation ceremonies started with the award of undergraduate degrees on Monday with 117 graduates bagging First Class Degrees in various courses.
Meanwhile, the award of higher degrees, including Masters degrees, M. Phil/MPH in the faculties of Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health, Dentistry and Law commenced on Tuesday at the International Conference Centre.
Giving a breakdown of the figure, the VC disclosed that 442 candidates completed their Ph.D, one candidate bagged M.D while 30 candidates completed their MPhil.
Others are MPH, 93 candidates; 2,940 academic masters, 407 professional masters and 109 postgraduate diploma degrees.
Olayinka said, “Our new and existing postgraduate programmes are popular and acceptable. Eloquent testimony to this is the fact that a total number of 12,301 applications were received during the 2015/2016 academic session, while only 6,520 qualified candidates were offered admission for various programmes.
“A total of 4,022 candidates will be receiving their respective higher degrees and postgraduate diplomas.
“A breakdown of the 4, 022 graduands includes Ph.D 442, M.D 1, MPhil 30, MPH 93, Academic Masters 2,940, Professional Masters 407 and Postgraduate Diploma 109”.
The VC stressed that the vision of the university was tied to the pursuit of the national goals of development through knowledge creation and dissemination, with a view of promoting national transformation.
“At this juncture, I wish to reiterate that the vision of the university is tied to the pursuit of the national goals of development through knowledge creation and dissemination, with a view of promoting national transformation,” the VC added.
