Troops neutralize terrorists, recover weapons in Yobe, Sokoto – Army

Troops of Operation Hadin kai have eliminated two terrorists trying to infiltrate Babangida community in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said in the statement that the troops frustrated the terrorists, who resorted to pillaging in order to replenish their failing logistics owing to the blockade against them.

The statement read that the insurgents made efforts to infiltrate and pillage the community, but were met with counter attack by the Nigerian troops.

It stated that the insurgents were forced to withdraw in disarray, leaving traces of blood littering their route as they fled.

“Aside inflicting casualty on the insurgents, the gallant troops also captured one BHT/ISWAP Heckler and Koch 21 guns, three AK-47 rifle magazines, 213 links of 7.62mm (NATO) and two grenades.

“The troops have been commended by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, for their doggedness in expeditiously conducting the counter attack.

“He also encouraged them to remain resolute in the ongoing operations against the insurgents,’’ the statement read.

It expressed optimism to the people of Yobe and the North East that the military was determined to rout the terrorists from their hideouts.

It also encouraged them to continue to avail troops with information that could enhance ongoing operations in the region.

In a related development, the Defence Headquarters said, on Monday, in Abuja that troops of Operation Hadarin Daji, in conjunction with other security agencies, eliminated scores of Islamic States for West African Province terrorists in Sokoto State.

A statement by the Director, Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Benjamin Sawyer, indicated that the terrorists were eliminated during a foiled attack on the Forward Operation Base at Burkusuma, a remote border settlement with Niger Republic in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

“The aggressive operations of troops of the FOB as witnessed in recent months in the North West region had been a thorn in the flesh of ISWAP terrorists.

“The main troops were out conducting offensive operations within their area of responsibility,’’ it read.

“The swift reinforcement by troops helped to counter the attack as many of the ISWAP fighters were eliminated, while some scrambled with various degrees of injuries.

“Troops are currently in hot pursuit of the criminals to Bassira in Niger Republic,” the statement added.
