A 200-Level student of the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, owned by Bayelsa State, has been shot dead.
The deceased, identified as James Okunmakpeye, was said to have been shot in the head by a suspected cult member while standing by the door of a lecture hall in the institution.
He was a student of the Marketing Department, Faculty of Management Science.
The deceased was said to have been giving his lecturer, who was already in the hall, reasons for coming late to class when he was shot dead.
Students and lecturers were said to have scampered for safety when the incident occurred.
Spokesperson for the university, Ingezi Idoni, confirmed the incident, saying security agents had already been contacted.
“There was a lecturer in the class during the incident. He was shot by the door of the lecture room. He was late to the class and while he was offering reasons for his lateness, someone came from behind and shot him,” he explained.
“The culprit ran towards the Ogunbiri side of the institution where the perimeter fencing has failed and escaped,” he added.
