The police in Ogun have arrested an electronic dealer, Ezekiel Igbokwe, for allegedly killing a 38-year-old man, Victor Olatundun, accused of having extra-marital affair with his wife.
The incident occurred when Igbokwe, 32, returned home unannounced from a business trip to Onitsha, Anambra State, and allegedly met Olatundun in bed with his wife, Juliet, in their home.
A scuffle was said to have ensued between Olatundun and Igbokwe, who quickly got hold of a machete and inflicted fatal injuries on his wife’s alleged lover’s hand and head, resulting in the former’s death later in the hospital.
Parading the suspect at the Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the state Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, said that Igbokwe was arrested by the police following his alleged killing of Olatundun.
Igbokwe, who confessed to committing the crime, explained that the incident was the handiwork of the devil and stressed that he did not mean to murder Olatundun.
He said that he had wanted to settle the matter with Olatundun, but because he couldn’t control his anger on sighting him on his bed with his wife, he dealt some machete blows on the deceased.
“I traveled to Onitsha but when I came back, I met a man inside my room and we started fighting. The man was stronger than me; so, I drew a cutlass and cut him on the right hand. His veins cut; we took him to the hospital and the second day he died.
“It was not my intention to waste a soul like me. It is satan’s handiwork. My aim was just to warn him and report to the police,” Igbokwe said.
Igbokwe, who hails from Eboyin State, also denied allegations that he had not been taking care of his wife of 12 years and mother of his four children.
The suspect’s wife, Juliet, however, denied sleeping with Olatundun on the day her husband caught them in their matrimonial home.
She said that the deceased, who used to supply her the stock of snuff, which she sold to make ends meet in the past six months, only started an affair with her a month ago.
The 28-year-old mother of four also claimed that her husband had not been taking care of her as he usually traveled for months before returning home.
Juliet, who also confessed to the crime, maintained that she did not know whether the deceased used a charm to compel her into having an extramarital affairs with him.
She said that she had no other choice than to accede to the request by the deceased for a secret love affair, especially since she needed to take care of her children.
The police also paraded two other suspects, who specialised in crime ranging from car-snatching, armed robbery and truck hijacking within the state, Lagos and Ibadan axis
Parading the suspects, including Easily Olanrewaju and Ahmed Hamas, the state police commissioner said that they were arrested with some dangerous weapons in their possession.
Two pump action guns, one cut-to-size pistol, two live cartridges and assorted charms were recovered from them.
The Ogun police boss, however, assured that all the suspects would soon be charged to court.
