THE Nigerian Communications Commission has confirmed that the telecommunications fibre to the North East region of Nigeria has been cut off by some aggrieved labourers.
The Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Umar Danbatta, who confirmed the development, said the actions of the labourers constituted a threat to national security.
He spoke during a Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Implementation of the National Broadband Policy 2020-2025 in Abuja.
The aggrieved labourers, it was learnt, had been hired by certain individuals but were not paid, and so cut off the fibre infrastructure of MTN and Airtel, cutting off millions of people in Maiduguri, Yobe and others cities in the North East from communications within and outside the zone.
“Yes, we are aware of the cut off of fibre infrastructures in the North East last Friday. We took up the matter immediately. But reports reaching me right now indicates that some labourers are responsible. And that they have cut it again as of today,” Danbatta said, in response to questions by officials of the affected service providers.
He called on the National Security Adviser and the Borno State Government to wade into matter, assuring stakeholders that the matter would be duly addressed by the NCC.
