National President of Surveyors in Nigeria , Akinloye Oyegbola on Thursday said that Nigerians surveyors were not responsible for most of the illegal structures across the country .
Oyegbola said that failure on the part of the constructors not to follow the surveyor’ plan or document on buildings had necessitated illegal structures in the country
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, the President noted that if the document had been followed, it would have gone through the Ministry of physical planning and Urban Development for approval .
According to him, “when you have structures where they are not supposed to be , then surveyor document or plan had not been used, because if it was used, they would have gone through the ministry and it would not have been approved “.
Oyegbola , therefore, explained that for any approved structures to be erected, it was because the surveyor made it possible.
” And because the approval is given, the surveyor had already told the person that is about to be approved where exactly his land is. So if it is approved, the surveyor had made it possible,” he stressed.
He warned Nigerians not to think of surveyors as quack in their profession when their structures had not been approved, pointing out that it was a fault on the part of the constructors who have not given the surveyor a chance to work on the site.
He opined, ” So when you have not been approved, it is not just that the quack had been employed to do the service, it is just likely that the surveyor had not had the opportunity to even rendered any service to the site”.
The President, however, hinted that the main job of a surveyor on the site is ” to ensure that his plan is used. His job is to draw the plan”.
