Super Eagles of Nigeria began their quest for a fourth AFCON title in Ivory Coast on a shaky note on Sunday as they played out a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their Group A opener.
Equatorial Guinea headed into the game as the underdog with the Super Eagles tipped by football pundits to qualify to the next round alongside hosts, Ivory Coast.
However, Equatorial Guinea took a surprise lead against Nigeria as Ivan Salvador curled a low shot to give his side the lead in the 36th minute.
However, Victor Osimhen who is playing his first AFCON for the Super Eagles instantly responded for Nigeria to level for the Super Eagles.
Despite starting brightly, Nigeria soon lost their guards and Equatorial Guinea settled down into the game.
Statistically, the Super Eagles had 49% of the possession heading to the break while Equatorial Guinea had 51% of possession.
The three-time champions however, recorded the most shot on target while Jesus Owono was forced to make two saves.
The second half produced more action as both teams fought hard to get the winner in their opening game, but to no avail.
