Strike: Govt secretariat, power station, banks, schools, courts shut in Osun

There was a high level of compliance to the industrial action directed by the leadership of the labour movement on Monday, as schools, banks, power stations, law courts and the Osun Government Secretariat in Osogbo, Osun State capital were all shut.

Our correspondent monitoring compliance to the strike directive within Osogbo, also observed that security operatives were deployed to Government Secretariat and Osogbo Regional Transmission Company.

Public schools were also shut and some pupils unaware of the strike before leaving home for school, were observed returning home around Oke-Baale and Powerline Areas in Osogbo.

But pupils attending private schools were seen in their schools as academic activities progressed unhindered.

Speaking to journalists at the entrance to the premises, Musibau Okunloye, Chairman, Lagos Generation and Transmission Council, urged the Federal Government to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariff and do more in catering for the welfare of workers in the country.

He said, “My appeal to the Federal Goverment is just the same as what the Nigeria Labour Congress and TUC have said. They should listen to Labour. Labour is forced to be reckoned with.

“But in Nigeria today, we are seeing, labour being treated badly. So they should consider labour first in any policy that they want to come up with. Because this thing will cascade down the economy.

“This enforcement here, as members are outside the premises, will continue. We have withdrawn our services. As much as they are not ready to listen to our demands, we won’t return to work.”

Meanwhile, many bank customers who wanted to withdraw money from Automated Teller Machines in Osogbo were disappointed as most of the ATMs were not dispensing.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that banks around Fagbewesa, Fakunle and Ogo Oluwa areas were shut down.
