The Campaign for Democracy has said it takes exception to the way and manner the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission “has been constantly harassing a former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, over allegations of
fraud.”
The CD in a statement by its Secretary General, Comrade Ifeanyi Odili, said the anti-graft agency had been using “uncouth measures to conduct its investigations, and has now resorted to undue harassment in its dealing with Daniel, as if the man failed to respond when invited or obstructed their investigations in any
way.”
Odili said, “The EFCC should realise that we are in democracy and not under military rule, and as such, should not imagine that President Buhari, who oversees the country, is a military
man.
“Going to seal off companies owned by Daniel, where many Nigerians are feeding themselves and their family
members, without a court order to so do, reeks of sheer vendetta and political victimisation.
“For God’s sake, Daniel is a reputable citizen, a former governor of Ogun State who did not run abroad after leaving office
but chose to stay here in Nigeria. Therefore, the EFCC has yet to justify why it is descending on his investments on yet-to-be-proved allegations of
fraud.”
“If Daniel has been arraigned in court, the EFCC should wait for justice and act within civility by not taking to jungle justice. This is because, many Nigerians
will read in-between the line that the man is being persecuted because he belongs to opposition Peoples Democratic Party,” Odili, the CD scribe,
counselled.
