As reactions continue to trail the improvement recorded in the performance of students in the 2016 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination, the Head of National Office of the West Africa Examination Council, Mr. Olu Adenipekun has appealed to stakeholders including governments, parents, teachers and students to sustain the trend.
Adenipekun made the appeal while addressing journalists at the National Office, Yaba, Lagos on the release of the 2016 May/June WASSCE results.
He said that many factors could be responsible for the success but noted that the prime reason was the commitment on the part of teachers and students to study.
It would be recalled that there was significant improvement in students’ performance at this year’s WASSCE with a record of about 878,040 candidates, representing 52.97 percent, obtaining credits in five subjects and above including Mathematics and English as against 31.28 percent in 2014 and 38.68 percent in 2015.
Having credit in a minimum of five subjects is one of the basic requirements for gaining university admission in Nigeria.
Adenipekun also disclosed that the success recorded is not as a result of the Council lowering its standard or adjusting the marking scheme, adding that WAEC has maintained its standard in the five African countries for close to seven decades since its establishment.
The statistics of students’ performance in the May/June WASSCE below shows that this year’s performance witnessed significant improvement:
