The Chief Executive Officer, Supreme Educational Foundation, Mrs. Olubukola Adewuyi, has described sports as a veritable tool for boosting perseverance and resilience in youths.
Adewuyi gave this perception in an interview with The Point at the school’s 17th annual inter house sports competition with the theme ‘Too fit to quit’ in Lagos.
She said, “Sports and education are interwoven; you cannot leave one out. Sport teaches perseverance and you need perseverance while you study. Sport teaches you to want to win; students can apply this to academics by striving hard to be the best. Children that are good with sports are very well grounded academically. The discipline in sports can be transferred to
academics.”
The CEO of Supreme also noted that sport, as a global activity, is usually neglected in the university.
She said, “Universities are not promoting sports as it should be. This inter house sport is to promote sports. Sport is not something around our neighborhood; it is done globally. We have the facility here at Supreme to help our athletes.
“The major aim is to celebrate good sportsmanship, teamwork and generally to promote sport in the country.”
She also said sporting activities help in promoting family bonding in schools as the inter house sports competition strengthens families
ties.
“Our students have represented the state in sports competitions and this brought mothers and fathers together. One of the grandmas ran; she asked for it. In future, we would be having grandmas.
“It is bonding time for family members; this is a fantastic achievement for us as a school. Sports bring everyone together,” she said.
The inter house sports competition, which featured different races and tug of war, involved four houses: The Lekki House (yellow); Obudu House (green); Tarkwa House (blue) and the Yankari House
(red).
Obudu House emerged the overall winner at the inter house sports competition with 888 points followed by Yankari House with 778 points while Lekki House came third with 745 points.
