The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the commencement of the payment of N70,000 minimum wage to civil servants in the state.

The payment will take effect from January 2025.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, said that the payment would cover the state civil servants and local government staff across the state.

The Governor also used the opportunity to urge the civil servants in the state to reciprocate government’s gesture by being alive to their responsibilities and redoubling their effort.

“With the commencement of the payment of this new national minimum wage, we expect a renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality and above all, seriousness from our civil servants,” part of the statement said.

The Governor added that his administration would remain workers-friendly and noted that the payment of salaries will now be between the 19th and the 22nd day of every month.

Civil servants in the state have been celebrating as the payment of the backlog of unpaid gratuity of retirees is being settled by the administration.

The state government sets aside N500 million monthly to pay the backlog of unpaid gratuity, while an additional N300 million has also been set aside monthly to pay those that retired from 2023 to date.

This decision is to guarantee that no civil servant in Sokoto State would be owned any gratuity by the Sokoto State government.

Prior to the coming of the present administration in the state, workers did not get their salaries when due, as they were paid after 50 days, against the usual 25-30 days.
