Former Nigerian international and coach Samson Siasia has called on Austin Eguavoen to clarify his future with the Super Eagles before the upcoming 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda in March 2025.
Eguavoen currently holds dual roles as both the interim head coach of the Super Eagles and the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), a situation Siasia believes is untenable.
Eguavoen stepped into the role of head coach on an interim basis after the NFF was unable to reach an agreement with German coach Bruno Labbadia.
Since taking the reins, Eguavoen has led the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, achieving this milestone with only one defeat during the campaign.
In a recent interview with Brilla FM, Siasia expressed his concerns regarding Eguavoen’s dual responsibilities, stating, “He cannot hold two positions at the same time. He should actually decide on which one to hold and leave the other.”
This call for clarity comes at a crucial time, as the Super Eagles prepare for the World Cup qualifiers where they are at risk of not qualifying for the mundial, having secured only three points and trailing leaders Rwanda by four points.
Siasia also took the opportunity to advise the NFF against hiring a foreign coach, asserting that Nigeria possesses sufficient talent within its domestic league to adequately lead the national team.
“We don’t want any foreign coach here because they are not coming to do anything. We have enough good materials at home that we should not be talking about hiring a foreign coach,” he remarked.
As the team prepares for their crucial qualifiers, the resolution of Eguavoen’s future will be vital for fostering the necessary focus and preparation within the squad.
