A police inspector attached to the Owerri Area Command Police Headquarters, in Imo State, has committed suicide.
The police officer, identified simply as Umoh, was said to have shot and killed himself on Wednesday in Owerri.
He was said to be a visiting officer posted to the area command on special duty.
Though no one could readily give an explanation on the circumstances surrounding the suicide, sources said he had complained about ill health before the incident.
He reportedly locked himself in a room in the police quarters and shot himself.
The gunshot sent panic waves across the area, it was learnt.
Our correspondent gathered that when the door of the room was forced open, Umoh was found dead in a pool of blood, having reportedly shot himself in the stomach.
Spokesperson for the police in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident, saying that the Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Muhammed, had ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.
