Police in Osun State have dragged a 60-year-old-man, Christopher Omolayo Fajemirokun, to a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly defrauding a widow after making a fake marriage promise to her.

The sexagenarian was accused of obtaining money and food stuff worth N4 million from the widow, Mrs. Sadiat Adeyemo.

Adeyemo was married to a deceased Army Colonel but later had a relationship with the new man.

The defendant, a married man with children, allegedly tricked the widow into believing that he had about 300 acres of land at Agbedi area, Osogbo worth N2.5 million and that he would take care of Adeyemo.

It was gathered that the defendant used to collect food stuff and money from his lover (Adeyemo) to cater for his family under the guise that they would later get married.

Adeyemo was said to have felt aggrieved realizing that Fajemirokun was not committed to their relationship.

The charge against the estranged lover read that “Christopher Omolayo Fajemirokun sometimes in the year 2021 in Osogbo, did fraudulently trick one Sadiat Adeyemo and obtained food stuff and amount of money totaling N4, 000,000 only, with frivolous promise of marrying her after the death of her late husband and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 421 of Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“You did obtain food stuff and some amount of money totaling N4, 000,000 only, from one Sadiat Adeyemo with pretence that you have about 300 acres of land at Agbedi area, Osogbo worth N2, 500,000 only per acre, the representation you knew was false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You did steal food stuff and some amount of money totaling N4,000,000 only, property of one Sadiat Adeyemo and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

Fajemirokun pleaded not guilty to the three-count-charge bordering on theft and fraud.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, opposed the bail application stressing that the defendant may abuse the bail privilege.

Chief Magistrate Olusola Aluko granted bail to the defendant who had no legal representation in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in the same amount.

He said that one of the sureties must be a chieftaincy title holder resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

The matter was adjourned till July 14 for mention.
