The United States government on Wednesday asked the Federal Government to “immediately reverse its ban on Twitter” adding that “this suspension is nothing more than state-sanctioned denial of free speech and should be reversed immediately.”

Samantha Power, an administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, made this known in a statement on Wednesday. She said that Twitter has over 40 million users in Nigeria adding that the directive must be reversed immediately.

“There are nearly 40m Twitter users in #Nigeria, and the country is home to Africa’s largest tech hub.”

More Nigerians are now criticising the goverent for the decision. Yet, many are also supporting the ban, saying no government would allow its country to be destabilised.

The Federal Government had on Friday announced that it was indefinitely suspending Twitter in Nigeria after the company deleted a tweet President Muhammadu Buhari, considered controversial.
