The National Association of Nigerian Students has appeal to President Muhamadu Buhari to reappoint former Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu to man the Ministry.
NANS President, Abubakar Mohammad Gambo made the appeal during the presentation of Award of Excellence to the Acting Registrar National Examination Council, NECO, Mr. Abubakar Gana at the councils’ Head Quarter Minna, Niger state.
He explained that Adamu was responsible for whatever achievements currently witnessed in NECO and the education sector.
“The present standards of transparency, accountability, incorruptibility, and above all cutting-edge efficiency which ensure the right thing was being done at all times with an effervescent zero tolerance for corruption and ineptitude in all the Agencies in the educational sector.”
Gambo also urged President Buhari to confirm the appointment of Gana as substantive Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO to ensure continuity in the affairs of the examination body.
According to him, the coming of Abubakar Gana as Acting head of the Council has restored peace and confidence in the staff as he has also been able to block financial leakages of the council.
“We are shocked by the achievement of Gana, who has been able to prudently manage the resources of NECO resulting in eliminating of wastage and stealing, thus giving rise to the remittance of almost N1 billion into the coffers of the federal government.”
Responding, the Acting Registrar, Abubakar Gana expressed joy at the gesture of the NANS executives to give him the award of the ‘Icon of Education and Transformation’ in the country.
He said NECO was set up in 1999 due to agitations by Nigerians as a result of issues associated with the West African Examination Council, WAEC.
“The coming of NECO has one advantage. It gave WAEC a wake up call. In the past, universities had to wait a long before they can admit students but, when we came up with 90 days results are out, and even now less than that, it changed everything. And, we have put so much on ground to ensure that our exams and certificates are respected in the world,” the Registrar stated.
