A 26-year-old fake doctor, Akilapa Johnson, has been arrested by the Oyo State Police command for procuring a life threatening abortion for 23-year-old Barakat in Ibadan.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, disclosed this ‎while parading Johnson alongside 14 other suspects at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
According to him, Barakat was lured to abort a five-month-old pregnancy, which resulted in serious complication, leaving the victim in critical condition at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
Oyebade said, “The abortion was carried out in the suspect’s one bedroom apartment, which served as clinic, located in a slum at Sasa, Ibadan. Shortly after the abortion, the victim developed serious complications, which resulted in her being admitted at the UCH where she is presently lying ill.”
Investigation revealed that the fake doctor, a school certificateholder, was only trained as a paramedic nurse and a first aider.
“In spite of his limited knowledge of medicine, the suspect had consistently treated unsuspecting patients who mistook him for a qualified doctor.
“Exhibits recovered from the suspects include two pieces of stethoscope, two pieces of Plaster of Paris bandage, four pairs of hand glove, injections and syringes,” he said.
The suspect, who admitted to the crime, said he had his training as a paramedic nurse in Port Harcourt.
“It was one Azeez that brought Barakat to my house for the abortion. It was after the pills she took that she developed the complication. I am regretting my actions now. I was only looking for a means of survival,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Command has recovered 226 stolen bags of cements from one Babatunde Umoru and Mohammed ‎Umoru at a stop and search exercise by the Command’s Swift Response Squad along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He said, “During investigation, it was discovered that the bags of cement found in their possession were stolen from the block industry of ‎one Lawal Amubieya at Akala area, Elebu, Ibadan.
“Further investigation revealed that the suspects, who specialised in breaking into block industries and construction sites and stealing bags of cement, confessed to have stolen over 200 bags from two construction sites at Odo-Ona Apata and from a block industry at Elebu area between May and June, 2016.
