Agroup, Northern Youth Assembly, has demanded a probe of the N6billion contract awarded by the Zamfara State Government for the renovation of five secondary schools in the state.

The NYA has, therefore, called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to beam its searchlight on the contract for proper scrutiny.

The Chairman of the Assembly, Munnir Haidara Kaura, alleged that the contract was a drain pipe on the resources of Zamfara State.

Kaura said, “This is a matter of serious concern and for the people of Zamfara State; it raises a lot of questions for a government to award a contract worth six billion naira for just renovation of five schools.”

According to him, it was surprising that a government that could not pay the examination fees of the indigenous students promptly could award such a huge amount of contract for the renovation of schools.

Kaura further lamented the poor performance of the students in the state as ranked by national examination bodies coupled with the lowest enrollment into Nigerian universities, owing to misplaced priority by the state government.

“Zamfara State is far behind in all phases of human endeavours. Considering the unfortunate direction the present administration is moving, the negligence in important sectors like education, health, agriculture and the threatening rate of unemployment has drastically turned our society into hopeless cranny”, Kaura said.

The NYA chairman said that the funds earmarked for the contract for the renovation of the five schools, if transparently utilised, could be used in even recruiting more qualified teachers and procuring instructional equipment.
