Prison break averted in Ebonyi, as combined security forces repel attackers

FOLLOWING a combined effort of the Nigerian Correctional Service Arms Squad, Army, Police and Civil Defence officers, a massive attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Command has been averted.

In a statement made available to The Point, signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ebonyi State Command, Iyasei Nneka, the Command said the about one hour and 30 minutes gun battle with suspected hoodlums, on Wednesday, was resisted to a point of retreat.

According to Iyasei, an Assistant Superintendent of Corrections 1, the protesters made efforts to pull down the gate, while others broke the walls.

But she said they were all resisted and repelled by the combined force of security operatives on ground.

Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the Command even as officers are on red alert, while immediate repairs have commenced on the affected parts of the fence.

The PRO noted that there were no casualties or inmate escape during the attack.

She said, “Massive attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Command, at about 3.45pm today 21st october 2020, by  ‘EndSARS’ protesters was subdued by the combined gallantry efforts of the Nigerian Correctional Service Arms Squad, Army, Police and Civil Defence after about an hour thirty minutes gun battle with protesters.

“Protesters made efforts to  pull down the gate, while others broke the walls but were resisted and repelled by the combined force. They were resisted to the point of retreat. Calm has been restored and all officers on red alert.”
