The Olowu of Owu, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Oba Adegboyega Dosunmu, has urged former president Olusegun Obasanjo to prevail on the Federal Government to ban the importation of garri from India.
Oba Dosunmu wondered why the Nigerian government should allow the importation of the commodity known to be produced in abundance in the country, saying no patriotic citizen would buy imported garri from India.
The monarch spoke at Obasanjo’s 80 birthday celebrations organised by the Ogun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria at The Treasure House of God Church, Abeokuta.
He noted that importing garri from India was an indication of a serious economic problem confronting Nigeria.
Oba Dosunmu, therefore, challenged Obasanjo to use his position as a former president and an elder statesman to advise the government to urgently stop the importation of garri into the country.
He said, “I think Obasanjo, try your best that somehow some people who are in authority will stop the importation of garri from India. If we begin to eat India garri in Nigeria, then this country is in serious economic danger. “
The Olowu further noted that such a development could also make Nigerians to start buying imported popcorn from Germany.
“Obasanjo, you are 80; before you are hundred, better know how to advise us, including people from our village, Ibogun –Akiyode, how to comport ourselves so that this country does not begin to eat the guguru (pop corn) made in Germany.” he added.
