Some of the electricity consumers in Lagos and Ogun states, within the coverage of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, have kicked against alleged outrageous bills, which increased by 100 per cent or more in February 2018.

A resident of Omolara Street, Ojodu-Berger, Mr. Tayo Osundiran, told our correspondent that his electricity bill increased from N8, 000 to N16,000 between January and February, 2018.

He said, “The unfortunate thing is that power supply dropped drastically in February and the company asked us to pay more for the little it supplied. For the past five days, power was supplied to us for less than 30 minutes daily and it would soon insist we pay for what we didn’t use.

“In November 2017, our transformer was taken for repair by IE, which lasted about three weeks, and we were billed for using power for the month. We complained about it to the area office on Aina Street and they promised to deduct it from December’s bill, which was not done.”

Another resident of Ojodu Abiodun area, Ogun State, Mr. Joshua Ogunseye, alleged that the electricity charge in his area also increased in January 2018 as his bill, which varies between N7,000 and N11,000, went up to N20,000.

He said, “Despite the fact that I’m using the (conventional) meter, they don’t read my meter, they just give me estimated bills and the painful part is that the electricity is not regular, it keeps getting worse every time.

“The increment is so much but l believe they are looking for ways of milking us. My son has gone to their office on several occasions to give them the readings but they do not adopt it. One of them told me that if the reading is too low, they would not adopt it.”
