Kwara State Police Command has arraigned musician Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, known as Portable, before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ilorin, the state capital, for allegedly defaming, threatening the life and assassinating the character of Fuji musician Akorede Babatunde Okunola known as Saheed Osupa.
Portable was arrested by the police at around 7:25 pm on Saturday in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, and taken to Ilorin by Kwara State police operatives.
The details of the musician’s arrest were disclosed in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
“Police detectives of Kwara Command have taken lawful steps in line with due process to investigate the allegations,” said Ejire-Adeyemi.
Before his arrest, Portable allegedly threatened the life of Saheed Osupa, criminally defamed him, acted in a conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and resorted to the use of abusive and insulting words, the police said.
The Kwara Police spokesperson had revealed that Osupa had petitioned the police against Portable, and they swung into action by weighing the allegations, viewing pieces of evidence to support the claim, and securing a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin.
“Upon his arrival, the suspect’s statement was taken in the presence of legal representatives from both parties. He is currently in custody and arrangements are being made to charge him to court without delay,” the Kwara Police spokesperson added.
On Monday, the police dragged Portable to court and slammed him with offences bordering on threat to life, defamation and character assassination on Osupa.
The defendant pleaded not guilty. His defence counsel, Ezekiel Adebayo, moved an oral bail application for Portable.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in the same amount.
One of the sureties must be the Chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria in Kwara State while the other should be a landed property owner at the Government Reserved Area in Ilorin.
Speaking after the court session, lawyer to Portable, Adebayo said though the bail conditions were stringent, the singer would strive to meet them.
This is not the first time Portable will land in police custody since 2025 began.
The “zazu” crooner was arrested in February for assaulting government officials. He claimed he was mentally unstable at the time and was released.
