Police drag man to court over alleged theft of laptops, phones worth N12.2m

A 28-year-old-man named Adekunle Oriyomi Ridwan, has been dragged before a Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo by the Osun State Police Command over allegations of theft and threat to life.

Ridwan was accused of stealing laptops and phones worth the sum of N12, 200,000 (twelve million two hundred thousand naira only) from a businessman called Borode Ademola.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Temitope Fatoba, told the court that the defendant obtained the items from Ademola under the pretense that he would ship the items to Dallas in Texas for him.

However, Fatoba said that the accused person threatened to kill the complainant if he continued to demand for a refund for the said goods.

The charge brought against him read that “You, Adekunle Oriyomi Ridwan, and others now at large, on the 17th of May, 2022, at Kobongbogboe area, Osogbo, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit a felony to wit: obtaining goods by false pretense and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 422 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun, 2002.

“You (defendant) and others at large, on the same date and time, did conspire among yourselves to commit a felony to wit: stealing and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State, 2002.

“You did by false pretense and with intent to defraud, obtain eight Lenovo laptops valued at N8,700,000 (Eight million, seven hundred thousand naira only) and seven i-phones valued at N3,500,000 (Three million, five hundred thousand naira only) from one Borode Ademola under the pretense of shipping same to Dallas in Texas, a pretense you know to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State, 2002.

“You did unlawfully convert to your own use, eight Lenovo laptops valued at N8,700,000 (Eight million, seven hundred thousand naira only) and seven i-phones valued at N3,500,000 (Three million, five hundred thousand naira only), totally valued at N12,200,000 (Twelve thousand naira only), property of one Borode Ademola and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State.

“You did with intent to intimidate or annoy, threaten to kill one Borode Ademola and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 86 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State, 2002.”

Ridwan, however, pleaded not guilty to the five-count-charge. Defence counsel, Tunbosun Oladipupo, urged the court to grant the defendant bail.

Chief Magistrate Olusola Aluko granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like amount. Aluko said that one of the sureties must be a civil servant not below grade level 12 with a tax clearance certificate.

The matter was adjourned till December 12, 2022.
