A woman in Ogun State, Temitope Adetanju, has been taken into custody by operatives of the state police command for assaulting a 12-year-old girl over allegations of stealing biscuits and some edibles.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed on Friday that the incident happened on Tuesday in the Isewo Obada Oko area of Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state.

Odutola noted that the suspect, who was a guardian to the victim, had allegedly beaten the minor and inserted a piece of firewood in her private part.

She added that upon receiving the report of the assault, the Divisional Police Officer in the area swung into action and deployed the division’s juvenile officer to the scene of the incident.

Odutola said, “The incident occurred on 11/06/24 at about 1100hrs. The Divisional Police Officer received information that a 12-year-old girl from Isewo Obada Oko was severely beaten and had a piece of firewood inserted into her private part by her guardian, one Temitope Adetanju, a 25-year-old woman residing at the same address.

“On receipt of the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer deployed the Officer in Charge of Juvenile Welfare Center, to apprehend the suspect. Upon her arrest, it was discovered that the victim had stolen items including biscuits worth N200, Milo worth N150, and Mr. Fruit worth N300.”

The PPRO added that the suspect confessed to committing the crime and had been subjected to further investigation.

“The suspect admitted to committing the crime, and the investigation is ongoing,” she disclosed.

It was reported last Thursday that the Lagos State Police Command arrested a 32-year-old, Funmi Faith, who was captured maltreating a female child in a viral video.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement.

Before her arrest, an X.com user had shared the video asking for help rescuing a female child who was being maltreated.

A voice in the video condemned the treatment as “dehumanising” and appealed to the Lagos State Government for intervention.

Barely a week ago, the Ifo Division of the Ogun State Police Command arrested a member of the National Youth Service Corps, Solomon Daniel, for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl at Ajowa, in the Ifo Local Government Area.

Daniel, who is currently undergoing his youth service programme at the Eweekoro Local Government Area, was accused of having carnal knowledge of the minor in an uncompleted building.

A police source, who was privy to the incident but was not allowed to speak, said on Wednesday that the case was reported by the victim’s father later that day.

It was said that the 31-year-old man allegedly waylaid the minor, grabbed her waist and took her to an uncompleted building, where he defiled her.
