The Police in Osun State have arrested a housewife, Mrs. Niniola Romoke for allegedly pouring substances suspected to be poison in her community well.
It was gathered that people of Aganga community in Osogbo where Romoke resides drink from the well and use its water for other purposes.
However, sources said that Romoke was having a disagreement with some members of the community before she poisoned the well located within the house of one of her perceived foes.
Concerned residents who allegedly saw the suspect pouring some oil substance inside the well raised the alarm and invited the police to arrest the aggrieved woman.
When the matter was brought before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court recently, Police prosecutor, B. Omojola, explained that Romoke had threatened to kill one Adeniyi Oyelakin before fouling the well.
Omojola disclosed that the incident happened sometime in May 2024 at Aganga Area in Osogbo.
The three counts preferred against the 38-year-old defendant read, “That you Niniola Romoke, sometime in the month of May 2024, at Aganga area, Osogbo, Osun State in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did unlawfully corrupt or foul the water of a drinking well by pouring oily substances into the said well which render it less fit for the purpose of drinking or it is ordinarily used for, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 245 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
“On the same date, time, place in the aforementioned Magisterial district, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by fouling a drinking well which the people of Aganga Community drinks from or used for other purposes, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
“You did with intent to intimidate or annoy, threaten to kill one Adeniyi Oyelakin and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 86 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”
She pleaded not guilty to the allegations. She was not legally represented in court.
However, Magistrate A. O. Odeleye granted her bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in the same amount.
The matter was adjourned till November 7 for mention.
