Police arrest two for breaking into shops, carting away N2.4m wares

Two men, Ganiyu Abass, 32, and Babatunde Olalekan, 45, have been dragged before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, for allegedly breaking into shops and carting away some wares.

The police accused the duo of conspiring to cart away goods valued at N2, 435,000 from some shops.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, said that the accused persons committed the offence at night at Odiolowo area, Osogbo.

The charge brought against them read that “You, Ganiyu Abass, and Babatunde Olalekan, and others at large on October 15, 2022, between 6:30pm and 8:45am, 16th October, 2022, at Odiolowo area, Osogbo, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit shop breaking/stealing.

“You did break (into) the shop of one Jinadu Olanrewaju and steal laptop accessories and a consumer’s laptop all amounting to N750,000, properties of one Jinadu Olanrewaju.

“You did break (into) the shop of one Adeyemi Suliyat with intent to commit a felony therein. You did steal 25 bags of ladies’ bags valued at N375,000; 40 pieces of slippers and shoes valued at N320,000; three pieces of jean trousers valued at N400,000; 15 pieces of ladies top valued at N105,000; 30 pieces of round neck (shirts) valued at N210,000; 25 pieces of spray perfume valued at N200,000; one 32 inches of Plasma television valued at N75,000, total properties stolen valued at N1,685,000, properties of Suliyat Adeyemo.”

The defendants were said to have committed offences contrary to and punishable under sections 516, 413, and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The defendants had no legal representation.

Magistrate O. A. Odeleye granted bail to the two in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety each in like amount.

The Magistrate ordered that the sureties must submit their three-year-tax-clearance each.

The matter was adjourned till November 24 for mention.
