The Police in Osun State have arrested three soldiers who allegedly invaded a station at Obelawo area of Osogbo, the state capital and freed their colleague alongside other suspected hoodlums who were in detention.
It was learnt that gunshots were fired indiscriminately when the soldiers invaded the police post along the Ikirun-Osogbo, Osogbo on Tuesday night to free their detained colleague.
The residents of the community reportedly scampered to safety as gunshots tore through the night. The men who were on duty at the station were said to have fled their duty post during the encounter.
A source close to the police post, who pleaded not to be named, disclosed that some policemen had arrested some suspected cultists and kept them in the custody.
He said, “One of the suspected cultists that were arrested is related to a soldier. The man (soldier) came to the station in the afternoon on Tuesday to secure administrative bail for his brother.
“During interaction with the policemen, an argument ensued and the soldier was detained with some suspected cultists. However, he had communicated with his colleagues informing them that he had been detained at the police post.”
It was learnt that three soldiers, armed with knives and wearing camouflage vests, invaded the police post around 8pm to forcefully free their detained colleague.
Another source said, “The policemen started shooting into the air to scare the soldiers. Some of the policemen at the station fled as the soldiers chased them away from their duty post. The soldiers freed their colleague.”
Our correspondent gathered that the Police Anti-Cultism Tactical Unit later arrested the soldiers following the distress call that they received.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State Command, SP Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident saying, “arrests had been made.
“Suspects who claimed that they are military men from Ede took the suspected cultist away to Ede Military Barrack. We have made arrests.”
