The police in Ogun have arrested a 37-year-old man, Ifeanyi Ajaero, for allegedly tying his wife, Obiageli , 28, to a generator overnight after he had battered her.
The incident happened at Ewooluwo Sagamu in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the suspect, who was a member of the disbanded merchant Navy, chained his wife to the generator with handcuffs after he had seriously beaten her.
Residents in the area, who had always witnessed the frequent beating given Obiageli by her husband, alerted the police and the Divisional Police Officer in Sagamu, Superintendent Aduroja Moses, led policemen to the scene to rescue the victim and arrest the suspect.
Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to chaining the lady to a generator, claiming that his action was for self-defence.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Anti-human Trafficking and Child Labour unit of the State Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.
Oyeyemi, an assistant superintendent of police, added that the state police boss had, therefore, warned residents that the command would not tolerate any act of domestic violence by anyone.
