The police in Ogun have arrested a 20-year-old man, Nurudeen Akintoye, for having unlawful canal knowledge of a deaf and dumb teenage girl (names withheld).
The incident happened on June 7 at about 9.45 pm, when the suspect who lives in Ajura community in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state lured the 18-year-old victim into a bush and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
The victim, who the parents claimed was a virgin before the incident, the police said, was bleeding profusely from her private part.
The sight of the victim enraged the people of the area, who attempted to met out jungle justice on the suspect.
The timely intervention of the Divisional Police Officer in the Owode Egba Division, Chief Superintendent of Police Sheu Alao, who quickly led his men to the scene saved the situation as the suspect was quickly arrested and taken to the station.
The victim was taken to general hospital Owode Egba for immediate medical attention.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has directed that the suspect be transferred to anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the State Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and possible prosecution of the suspect. The police commissioner also warned members of the public to desist from applying jungle justice on anybody suspected of committing any crime, saying that all suspects are presumed to be innocent until a court of competent jurisdiction state otherwise.
