Police arraign man for stealing from state government

A 35-year-old man, Osunleye Jimoh, has been dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing some property belonging to the Osun State Government.

The Police Command accused Jimoh of stealing armoured cables and cables of eight air conditioners belonging to the government.

When Jimoh was arraigned alongside a man said to have received the stolen items, Yushau Musa, the police charged them on four counts bordering on conspiracy, theft and reception of stolen items.

Police prosecutor, Elisha Olusegun, further informed the court that Jimoh vandalised one Mikano Power generating set and eight air conditioners in Osogbo, which are property of the Osun State Government.

The charge preferred against the two defendants read, “That you Osunleye Jimoh, sometimes in the month of July 2024, at about 4:00pm at Osogbo, Osun State, in the Osogbo Magisterial did unlawfully vandalise one Mikano Power generating set and eight air conditioners, property of the Osun State Government, represented by Taiwo Adeleke and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“That you did steal Armored cables and cables of eight Air conditioners value yet to be estimated, property of the Osun State Government, represented by Taiwo Adeleke and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun of Nigeria, 2002.

“You did steal one gas cylinder, motor jack, car headlight, spoons, plates, value yet to be estimated property of one Adenike Olaniyi and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria.

“That you Yushau Musa, on or about the same day, time, place and the aforementioned Magisterial district, did unlawfully receive from one Osunleye Jimoh one gas cylinder, motor jack, car headlight, one scale, all at paltry rates knowing same to have been stolen or fraudulently obtained, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 427 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”

While Jimoh pleaded guilty to the allegations, Musa entered into a not guilty plea.

Counsel to the accused persons, Tunbosun Oladipupo, urged the court to grant the second defendant bail.

Olusegun asked the court for adjournment to enable him furnish the court with exhibits and facts of the case since Jimoh pleaded guilty.

Magistrate M. A. Olatunji, however granted the second defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in the same amount.
