There is pandemonium in Rivers State over the impeachment process against the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara by the state lawmakers.

As some legislators sat on Monday to begin an impeachment process on the governor, there were gunshots and firing of teargas within the state House of Assembly complex.

The development was coming after an explosion at the assembly complex on Sunday night as the chamber was razed.

Following the gunshot and firing of teargas, people ran helter-skelter as policemen chased people, including workers whose offices are located within the area.

In all of these confusion and crisis, the state governor is not spared as he was also allegedly attacked by the Police.

In a video circulating online, The Point observed the Police firing teargas at the governor’s direction while he and his supporters stormed the assembly complex amid the impeachment saga.

The video captioned “Police pouring water and teargas on governor of Rivers, Sim Fubara on his way to the state House of Assembly Complex,” was posted by an X user, Imran Muhammad.

Recall that the lawmakers had early this morning converged for a plenary where a notice of impeachment of the governor was signed.

The Point had reported that the Speaker of the Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, who presided over the sitting and about 22 other lawmakers, resolved to begin the process.

The leader of the House, Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor were also suspended by the lawmakers during the sitting.

The lawmakers immediately after the sitting, were seen at about 8:15 a.m. driving out of the Assembly with heavy security escorts.

Meanwhile, the governor has said he has not committed any offence to warrant impeachment by the state parliament.

The governor said this while addressing his supporters at the Assembly complex.

He said, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.”

The governor, who assured the people of the state of getting the dividends of democracy, said he would speak on the matter at the appropriate time.

“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press,” he said.
