NPFL’s rave of the moment, Plateau United is already blazing the trail after snatching a point in far away Katsina to remain at the top of the league with a two-point lead.

The Jos side has another tough outing in the series as they set their eyes on the Niger Tornadoes duel on Sunday.

The match is expected to make or mar Plateau’s chances of remaining at the top of the league. Plateau is topping the table with 36 points after 20 games, with the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club breathing down their neck. The Lagos team is billed to host Wikki Tourists of Bauchi in a mustwin encounter.

A victory for MFM will automatically push them up a point ahead if Plateau slips. But Plateau United’s Kennedy Boboye is optimistic that his side will remain strong. Boboye declared to those expecting the club to slip up to keep waiting.

“I know many are not expecting us to remain on top but all I will say is ‘we will see.’ I don’t make predictions. I don’t brag. All I will say is keep watching,” he said. Only a few would have predicted that Plateau United would be leading at the halfway mark but their steady run, which saw them off the top spot only on twice or thrice, is a pointer to the determination of the team to achieve success.

The pre-season favourites were Kano Pillars, Enyimba, Rivers United and defending champions Rangers. But these teams trail Plateau United. Notwithstanding the consistency of Plateau United, many pundits are of the view that the leaders would still give way to any of the more fancied teams. But looking over his shoulders, Boboye does not seem fazed by the predictions of possible threats to the club’s title ambitions, which incidentally will also be his first as a coach.

“I am not focusing on what other teams are doing but working to perfect our game. While we were on break, I knew every other team would be fortifying their squad towards a better performance in the second stanza, but that is not supposed to be my focus,” he said.
