A yet-to-be-identified petroleum tanker driver lost his life after the tanker got engulfed in flames along the Ojoo-Iwo Road Expressway in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at around 2:45 am on Wednesday.
The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and hit two other trucks on the road. As a result of the impact, the two trucks somersaulted into a ditch and engulfed in flames.
The General Manager of Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, described the accident as unfortunate and revealed that firefighters were deployed to the accident scene when informed.
He added that an apprentice of the driver at the accident scene was rescued and has been admitted to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
“The unfortunate incident was reported at exactly 02:45hrs on Wednesday, 22nd January 2025. The fire personnel, led by ACFS Ogunkanbi, were promptly deployed to the scene and arrived on time.
Upon arrival, we found three trucks, about 20 meters apart from one another, involved in the fire accident.
“The driver of the tanker was recovered, while the motor boy was rescued alive from the fire by the fire officers and conveyed to UCH for medical treatment.
“The devastating fire destroyed the petrol tanker, but the agency’s personnel saved the other two trucks and vehicle spare parts.
“The accident occurred when a trailer tanker carrying PMS lost control while in motion and hit the other two trucks in front. The two trucks somersaulted into the nearby ditch and caught fire.”
