A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party in Delta State, Chief Hope Erute, has berated Nigerian political parties for allegedly lacking ideologies.
Erute, who spoke to our correspondent in Warri, also blamed the lack of ideology by political parties in the country for the propensity by politicians to defect from one party to another with “reckless abandon.”
He said Nigerian politicians were only after pecuniary gains with which to fill their pockets, stressing that politicians in the country did not care about the feelings of ordinary Nigerians.
The PDP chieftain said rather than leave their parties over spurious claims of injustice, politicians should stay put and look for solutions that could resolve any problem confronting them.
“No party in Nigeria has an ideology. I am a PDP member and I remain a PDP member, no matter the crisis we are having in the party. Look at APC today, the party is populated with people from PDP. It is still the same people that have been in power since 1999 that are still in power today. So where is the change mantra that APC is talking about? The change mantra is not working,” Erute said.
He also called on Nigerian youths to get ready to take over the reins of power from the older generation, stressing that the future belonged to them.
Erute chided President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing old men and dead people into the boards of Federal Government agencies, stressing that the government under Buhari had been clueless.
He added, “Look at the recent appointments into the board of Federal Government agencies recently released to the public. A lot of them are old men, who have been running things in the country since. Some of the men in that list are even dead. These are old men who are above 65 years. What about the youths in this country. Are they not capable of handling such appointments?
“I think it’s high Nigerian youths took their destinies in their hands and wrestle power from these old men, who have continued to perpetuate themselves in power. The youths should form a political party of their own and support one young candidate of their choice. They should stop running after these old men that have continued to mortgage their happiness.
“Look at the APC, for instance, they are still recycling the old people. They are not bringing in the youths. The future belongs to the youths. But the average Nigerian youth cannot continue to wait for the old ones to die. The youths have to come together and fight for themselves.”
