At least one person was killed in a reprisal attack by a notorious cult group, Eye, on some members of the Odua Peoples Congress at the Adura area of Sango in Ogun State.
Our correspondent learnt that the attack, which threw residents of the area in a panic, occurred following an alleged previous attack on the cult group, which left one of its members, simply identified as Dangote, severely injured.
It was also gathered that the Eye cult group members, who embarked on the reprisal attack, allegedly killed one of the OPC members, Olamilekan Akinwunmi, who sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Akinwunmi, according to a source, was attacked on a football field within the community by the cult group. He was later rushed to a hospital, but died from the injuries inflicted on him.
A resident of the area, Olawale Lukman, told our correspondent that “the victim died in hospital three days after the attack.”
Trouble started about two weeks ago, when the OPC challenged the cult group over their alleged criminal activities in the area.
The OPC had demanded that the cult group should vacate a particular place in the area, Adura arena, “which the group had turned to a haven for perpetrating its illegal activities.”
It was also learnt that the OPC’s quit notice followed a restriction order imposed by the area police command to rid the community of criminal activities allegedly traced to the group.
But the cult group took the enforcement of the police restriction order by the OPC as an insult. The development reportedly degenerated into a face-off between the two groups.
Our correspondent learnt that in the heat of the crisis, the OPC apprehended a member of the cult group, Dangote, who they severely dealt with. But he later managed to escape from their hands, it was gathered.
However, shortly after, Dangote’s younger brother, who also allegedly belongs to the cult group, led another attack on the OPC, which resulted in the killing of Akinwunmi.
Another resident, simply identified as Badmus, said, “Akinwunmi died as a result of the injuries he sustained from the attack by the Eye. It was a bloody
sight.
“The cult boys are deadly. Before now, they used to use that Adura field area as hideout, where they smoke cannabis. But the police came one day and arrested some of them. After some time, they began to use part of the place again. That was why the OPC challenged them and they took it as a slap.”
Meanwhile, a community leader in the area, Alhaji Bolatito Akeem, has called on police authorities in Ogun State to find a means to end the menace of cultism in the community.
Akeem, who said no fewer than three people had been killed in various cult clashes within the community in recent times, said, “The Police need to come to our aid in this area, especially as we approach the festive period. Our people now live in fear because of these evil people, who are disturbing our peace, both day and night.”
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said though his office was not aware of the case, the police would ensure peace reigned in every part of the state, especially during the festivities.
Oyeyemi, an assistant superintendent of police, said, “Let me use this medium to remind everybody that our command will not leave any stone unturned in our bid to ensure peace reigns in Ogun State, especially as the festive season draws nearer.”
