The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Muhammed Abba, has confirmed that six persons were killed in the chaos that happened over control of local government secretariats in the state.
Leaders and members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress, alongside their thugs, had clashed amid gunshots on Monday in a bid to occupy the offices at the councils.
Reacting to the bloodshed through the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, on Tuesday, the CP said six people were killed while “many have been hospitalised.”
Abba disclosed that the tactical squads from other states that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, deployed to Osun arrived midnight.
While assuring that the command would ensure that perpetrators of the fatal violence would be arrested and prosecuted, he said peace is gradually returning to the state.
“The event of yesterday left six people dead and many people are hospitalised. We are not happy with what happened and various groups have been called for meeting, we have held series of meetings by the Commissioner of Police to ensure that this does not happen.
“We expressed deepest sympathy with those affected that either lost their lives and property. The CP assures thorough investigation and promise that perpetrators face full wrath of law.
“Citizens are urged to remain calm and patience as police work to restore peace. Those tormenting this trouble should desist from this act. This state is known for peace.
“We won’t allow anyone to disrupt the peace of our state.
“The IGP has deployed mobile policemen from outside the state to Osun, they have arrived yesterday night.
“The command will leave no stone unturned to achieve peace. Let us give peace a chance,” Opalola said.
Meanwhile, observations and findings by The Point on Tuesday revealed that law and order have been restored to the local areas as armed policemen man the main gates of many secretariat visited.
Commercial and other activities around the council offices have resumed.
