There was pandemonium in Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday, as a Police officer allegedly shot a truck driver dead and fled from the scene.

Eyewitnesses said that the deceased, who was driving a borehole drilling truck, was brutalised before being gunned down at the Ota-Efun area of Osogbo.

The drilling truck, belonging to Shekeena Global, reportedly broke down along Ikirun Road, around 10:30am on Friday.

It was gathered that the truck broke down in the middle of the road with the driver and the crew members trying to fix the it when the police officers arrived at the scene.

An eyewitness said that the police officers, who disembarked from a mini commercial bus, popularly known as ‘Korope’ hit the driver who was under the truck before allegedly shooting him in the chest.

The source added that the police officers, immediately after the act, removed their uniforms and ran away when a mob approached the scene.

“Police were shooting guns and teargas to scare away the angry crowd,” an eyewitness said.

The corpse of the driver had been reportedly taken away by the police.

Meanwhile, some angry youths in the community reportedly took to the streets in protest against the alleged police brutality in the state following the incident.

There was heavy traffic along the Ikirun-Osogbo Road as protesters reportedly mounted a barricade.

The Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Oroki Park, Osogbo, Adewale Kareem, later visited the scene to pacify the angry protesters.

Efforts to get reaction from the Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State Police Command, SP Yemisi Opalola, were abortive as she did not respond to calls made to her telphone line as of the time of filing this report.

Recall that in July, some policemen reportedly killed a commercial motorcyclist identified as Saheed Olabomi along Oba Road, via Oke-Onitea junction, Ring Road, Osogbo.
