With a view to achieving full implementation of the disability law in Osun State for the improvement of the welfare of Persons With Disabilities, Bureau for PWDs in the state has indicated interest in partnering with non-governmental and civil society organisations in and outside Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Ayobami Oyetunde, made this known while playing host to an advocate for PWDs, Afolabi Fajemilo who paid a courtesy visit to the bureau in Osogbo.
According to Fajemilo, the Executive Director of Festus Fajemilo Foundation, an NGO, the purpose of the visit was to explore collaboration opportunities with the agency in support of the state government’s full implementation of the disability law.
He said the Foundation aims to enhance the capacity of key government personnel in Osun State, ensuring they comprehend the law’s provisions, roles, and responsibilities.
Fajemilo reflected on the Foundation’s past efforts with the disability community and NGOs/CSOs, which led to the enactment of the disability law.
He expressed gratitude to the House of Assembly member representing Obokun constituency for championing the bill and to the current Assembly for passing it.
The advocate for PWDs commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for signing the bill into law.
In his remarks, Oyetunde pledged to unite all cluster groups, ensuring a unified voice.
The Executive Secretary of the bureau emphasised the agency’s readiness for collaboration with NGOs and international organisations, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to supporting persons with disabilities under Governor Adeleke’s leadership.
The state chairman of Joint National Association For Persons With Disabilities, Oluwafemi Stephen also expressed commitment to close collaboration with the bureau.
He encouraged NGOs and other stakeholders to partner with them, acknowledging that government’s efforts alone are not enough to ensure that PWDs are given their rights of place and catered for as spelt out in the disability law.
